Meniscus - Absence Of I EP

Band: Meniscus
Album: Absence Of I EP
Released: 2007
Label: self-released

Meniscus's lush ambient soundscapes, driving bass lines and poly-rhythmic beats create a unique musical experience that has been hypnotising Australian audiences since 2005. The Sydney trio's unique brand of instrumental post rock blends the moody dynamics of acts like Mogwai and Sigur Rós with the prog rock technicality of King Crimson.

The critical success of the band's 2007 EP The Absence of I elevated Meniscus's profile globally with rave reviews from The Silent Ballet (“Beautifully crafted and impeccably conceived....very good doesn't quite sum this up, it's amazing”) and Sputnik Music (“Meniscus have a wizardly sense of dynamics, songs flowing with the purity of water....technically brilliant and tightly composed”).

Despite this success, the departure of drummer and co-founder Duncan Wilson forced Meniscus into hiatus in 2008. In early 2009, founding members Daniel Oreskovic (guitar) and Alison Kerjean (bass) made a comeback to the live circuit with new drummer Cameron Brennan, showcasing new songs and arrangements.

In late 2009, friend of the band, Marty Wong joined the band to mix visuals during live performance. Marty’s tasteful use of different visual themes for the bands live shows provided an extra texture and added to the cinematic style of the music. 2009 was rounded off with the band playing at their first music festival – The high and dry festival which was definitely a highlight of the year for the band.

In 2010, the band spent a great deal of time working on new material and recording demo versions of the tracks that would later be recorded professionally by Ash Maklad at Eargasm studios and mastered by Paul Stefanidis at Viking Lounge mastering.

2011 looks to be a very exciting year for Meniscus, with the release of their first studio album entitled “war of currents”. The new album was officially released on July 15th and Meniscus will be taking their new music to several cities around Australia soon after.

Jakob - Subsets Of Sets

Band: Jakob
Album: Subsets Of Sets
Released: 2001
Label: Midium Records

Jakob is a New Zealand post-rock band, based in Napier, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The band consists of guitarist Jeff Boyle; bassist Maurice Beckett; and drummer Jason Johnston. They have been compared to such bands as Mogwai, Sonic Youth, Sigur Ros & ISIS, though they largely eschew any vocals or samples in their songs.  At times putting the post- into rock, and at others kicking the whole bloody fence down, Jakob’s lush and textured take on the guitar/bass/drums format continues to broaden and enthrall with every performance and release. Their music is captivating and mesmerizing, the sedate becoming devastating in the blink of a crowd’s collective eye. Echoing the graduated inclines and unexpected progressions found in their music and the expansive landscapes of their surroundings, this Napier three-piece has developed consistently, if sometimes unpredictably, since their formation in 1998. Since that time Jakob have connected listeners the world over with their cascading crescendos, performing at South By Southwest 2005 (one of the Austin Chronicle’s picks of the festival), Headlining Denmark’s Forma Nova Festival, showing their wares across the Tasman several times including playing alongside Australia’s equivalent of NZ rock heroes hero’s Shihad, Cog and touring the UK, Europe and USA extensively supporting the likes of Isis, Pelican, and The Hidden Hand along the way. Not that the band hasn’t left audiences around New Zealand enthralled – notable shows around the country include Big Day Out appearances in consecutive years, performing at The Mercury Rising and Rhythm & Vines festivals, a tour playing with former Can front man Damo Suzuki, and support slots with US acts Thrice & ISIS. Jakob was the hand picked support for prog-rock greats TOOL on their Big Day Out sideshows late Jan, early Feb of 2011.
